Surgical Technologist
Surgical Technologist is a 45-week program offered at the Provo Campus. This program enables students to assist in surgical operations and procedures under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel. Surgical Technologists prepare the operating room by assembling surgical equipment and instrumentation. They transport patients, assist with positioning, calculate blood loss, care for specimens, sterilize equipment, pass instrumentation, and aid the surgeon in retraction and visualization of the surgical field.
Program Length
The Surgical Technologist program is 45.5 semester hours in length. It includes 657 hours of lecture and lab instruction followed by an externship of 540 hours with experience in the OR's of various surgical sites.
Instructional Focus
1. Anatomy and Physiology: This covers areas such as anatomy, physiology, diet, disease, nutrition, and pharmacology.
2. Medical Terminology: This training prepares the student to understand the language of medicine. Word elements and there meanings and application are emphasized.
3. Asepsis and Infection Control: Describes the principles of asepsis, sources of contamination, and the sterilization process.
4. Instrumentation: Identifies basic surgical instrumentation by type, function, and name.
5. Surgical Procedures: Students learn the basic core and specialty surgical procedures, anatomy associated, and applicable instrumentation and equipment used.
Certification
Graduates of the program may sit for a national certification examination offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) to become Certified Surgical Technologists (CST).
Accreditation
AmeriTech College is institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Schools. The Surgical Technologist program at AmeriTech College is approved by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) and Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA).
