Medical Assistant


AmeriTech College offers a 34 week program at our Provo campus.  This course will provide students with comprehensive training in performing entry-level skills in medical offices and clinics.  The curriculum includes training in a wide variety of competency-based skills for both clinical and administrative areas necessary for assisting the physician in his/her practice.






Program Length


The Medical Assistant program is 36.5 semester credit hours in length. It consists of 30 weeks of classroom training followed by an externship of  4 weeks (160 hours) for a total of 34 weeks.

Instructional Focus

The Medical Assistant Program includes several areas of emphasis:

1. HUMAN BODY- This covers areas such as anatomy, physiology, disease, diet, nutrition, and pharmacology.

2. CLINICAL PROCEDURES AND LABORATORY- Students learn basic laboratory diagnostic procedures and medical office clinical skills including urinalysis, hematocrit, hemoglobin, injections, eletrocardiography, phlebotomy, patient preparation and vital signs, etc.

3. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY- This training prepares the student to understand the language of medicine. Word elements and their meanings and application are emphasized.

4. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTING (FRONT OFFICE)- Students learn office administration, computer procedures, bookkeeping, telephone etiquette, filing, accounts payable and receivable, billing, etc.

A limited radiography course may be taken as an enhancement in conjunction with the medical assistant program in order to provide additional skills sought after by physicians.

Certification

As a result of the institutional accreditation of AmeriTech College, graduates of this program are eligible to sit for an examination sponsored by the American Medical Technologists, who are members of the National Commission for Health Certifying Agencies, to become Registered Medical Assistants (RMA).

After completing the Medical Assisting program, students may certify through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) in the following areas: Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy Technician, ECG Technician, Medical Office Assistant, and Insurance Billing & Coding Specialist.

Accreditation

AmeriTech College is institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.

At the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation for Medical Assistant Education, the Medical Assistant Program is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
